Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn could be a solid comp for you if you’re writing a fantasy novel (or series) built around someone discovering and honing their own magical powers in the midst of an overdue revolution.
You can use comps to give readers a better idea of what they can expect from your own book (i.e., “This book is Mistborn meets Spoiler Alert inside of Willy Wanka’s factory!”). Additionally, you can read the book to improve your literary analysis and writing chops by breaking down and comparing the author’s writing and your own.
If your WIP has at least four of the following components, read the full piece to see if there are other attributes that would make it a good comp book for you.
-
Slavery
-
Revolution
-
Thieves
-
Heists
-
Protagonist discovering their own magic
-
Magical training by a mysterious legend
-
A world under dictatorship
